Applicant NIN field is required error: how do I resolve this?

The "NIN field is required" error appears when an employee tries to apply for Employee Benefits products (Flexi Loan, Maxi Loan, or Salary Advance) but their profile is missing a National Identification Number (NIN). NIN is one of the mandatory KYC identity fields alongside BVN, phone number, and residential address that must be on file before a loan application can be submitted. This is a profile-completeness block, not a rejection of the loan itself.

What to know

This error surfaces at the same step in the application flow where BVN is also checked after the applicant enters a loan amount and tenor and clicks Continue. Three causes account for most cases:

  • NIN was never added to the employee's profile

  • NIN was entered in the wrong format (spaces, letters, or fewer than 11 digits)

  • NIN was added but not saved before the applicant proceeded to the loan form.

How to resolve this

Start the loan application again.

  • Go to Employee Benefits (or "Access Funds Now") on your HRMS/Breeze dashboard, select the loan type (Flexi, Maxi, Term, or Salary Advance), and proceed to Continue as normal.

  • Go to your profile verification section. When the "NIN field is required" prompt appears, you'll be directed to a details page this is the same page used to add missing BVN. Go to Profile → Verification (or the identity details page shown on the error prompt).

  • Enter your NIN correctly. Your NIN is an 11-digit number issued by NIMC. Enter all 11 digits with no spaces or extra characters, then save.

  • Confirm the save was successful. After entering NIN, make sure the field reflects the saved value before navigating back to the loan application; don't close the page immediately after typing it in.

  • Restart the loan application. Return to Employee Benefits and begin the loan application again from the start; previously entered loan amount and tenor may not carry over.

  • Check BVN as well. Since NIN and BVN are both mandatory identity fields for loan eligibility, confirm your BVN is also on file; a missing BVN can trigger a similar block later in the same flow.

Escalate if it persists. If NIN is saved on your profile and the error still appears, contact support with your employee ID, company name, and a screenshot of the error.

Error messages — what they mean

Error message What it means and what to do
NIN field is required Your profile is missing a saved NIN. Go to Profile → Verification, enter your 11-digit NIN, and save before retrying the loan application.
BVN is mandatory A related identity field is also missing. See the BVN verification article — both BVN and NIN must be on file for loan eligibility.
Invalid NIN format The NIN entered has the wrong number of digits or contains invalid characters. Re-enter all 11 digits with no spaces.

If you have entered and saved your NIN correctly, confirmed your BVN is also on file, and the error still blocks your loan application contact support with your employee ID, company name, and a screenshot of the error message.
